What a Year for Lions Inline Hockey Club!

2024 has been an incredible journey for the Lions Inline Hockey Club! We have witnessed remarkable growth across all age groups and are proud to announce our biggest season yet, with 3 junior teams participating in the West Junior League and 5 senior teams competing in the West and North West Leagues.

Our Lions Senior Team had a fantastic season, finishing top of the B League and securing 2nd place in the West League. The confidence of both the Wild Lions and Lions Black teams has soared. Our junior players have been gaining invaluable experience through game days, and we have created two dedicated training sessions for our junior age groups by merging Wild Lions and Lions Black training at the Atherton rink.

As we look ahead to 2025, we are committed to further improving all our training sessions. The Lions Senior Team ended the year on a high by participating in the Turkey Cup yesterday. Although they finished 3rd, the team showcased remarkable talent, with five players aged 18 or younger holding their own against tough competition. They came away with 4 wins and 2 losses but played each game with a never-give-up attitude, taking more positives than negatives from the experience.

We also expanded into ice hockey by partnering with Riverside Raiders, a successful venture that saw some of our players taking up ice hockey and Riverside players joining us for inline hockey.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our coaches Dani, Oliver, Ben, and James for their hard work over the past 12 months. We also thank all the players and parents for their unwavering support throughout 2024.

We wish everyone a Happy New Year! The excitement doesn’t stop as the Lions Senior Team resumes training this Thursday, with games against Wigan and Heywood on Sunday morning. Wild Lions and Lions Black training also continues this Sunday, and Riverside Raiders are off to play Cobras at Deeside on Sunday night. We then welcome our Lion Cubs back after the Christmas break for their first training session of 2025 on Monday.

If you’re looking for a team for your children or yourself to join, drop us a message via DM or email us at info@lionsihc.co.uk. We are looking for both players and netminders to join us.

Lion Cubs Junior Training Session at Atherton Roller Rink

This Sunday, our Lion Cubs will have the opportunity to take over the rink at Atherton Roller Rink! Typically reserved for our Wild Lions and Lions Black teams, the rink is now available for our junior players to enjoy an extra training session and experience the facility.

Session Details:

  • Date: This Sunday
  • Location: Atherton Roller Rink
  • Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm

We will have three coaches on-site this weekend, and we plan to split the group into three smaller groups:

  1. Beginners: Newcomers to the sport will work on basic skating and stick-handling drills.
  2. Advanced Players: More experienced children will focus on advanced skating and stick-handling techniques.
  3. Goalkeepers: Dedicated goalkeeper training, focusing on positions and stance.

After these initial drills, goalkeepers will join the other groups for shooting drills and then a scrimmage session. This will allow all children to experience gameplay, including line changes and positioning during faceoffs.

We are nearing full capacity, but if you would like to bring your children to this session (Keeper or player), please send us a DM or email info@lionsihc.co.uk. This session is free for Lion Cub members who pay the monthly fee and £5 for those who want to join just this session. No prior experience is required, but children must have full equipment and be aged between 5 to 14.

November Highlights at Lions Inline Hockey Club

This November has been a transformative month for Lions Inline Hockey Club, marked by significant changes in our training sessions. With over 30 junior players now in the club, we have restructured our training to better accommodate our growing community.

Training Updates

  • Monday Night Sessions: We now hold dedicated training sessions for Under 9s and Over 10s at Ardwick Sports Centre.
  • Sunday Night Sessions: Our Wild Lions and Lions Black teams have merged their training sessions, now hosted on Sunday nights at Atherton Roller Rink.

These changes aim to enhance the development of both our junior and senior teams by focusing more on hockey skills rather than beginner skating. We’ve already noticed remarkable improvements in our Lion Cubs, Wild Lions, and Lions Black players.

Tournament Achievements

  • Toxic Tournament: Three of our Lion Cubs participated, with Ellis reaching the semi-finals and securing third place. Our under 8s and 10s netminder played in her first roller tournament, reaching the final and saving all penalties in the semi-final to help her team clinch second place.
  • Under 12s League: Our Lion Cubs under 12s team played their first league games. Despite not securing a win, the players gained invaluable experience and came off the rink with smiles, ready to tackle future games.

League Performance

  • Wild Lions & Lions Black: Both teams started their C League seasons, showing significant improvement from last year. Although they didn’t secure wins, the Wild Lions notably held T-Wrex to only four goals and scored one themselves.
  • Lions Black B League: The team faced tough competition in the North West B League but gained valuable experience to build on throughout the season.
  • Senior Team: Our senior team began the West A/B Round Robin with strong wins over Stars and Mooseheads 2, aiming for an A league spot this year.
  • Riverside Raiders: Despite a tough start against Solihull Viking with a short bench, the Raiders bounced back with a win against Altrincham Jets, showcasing strong team play and positive performance.

Looking Ahead
As we move into December, our Under 8s and 10s junior leagues kick off, and our senior team competes in the North West A league after last season’s B league win. The Riverside Raiders also have exciting games lined up, including a home game against a Navy team and Buccaneers.

Our senior teams are strong, but we always welcome new players. If you’re interested in joining one of our five senior teams or getting your children involved in our junior teams, we have spots available for Under 8s and Under 12s.
